May 14

– private visit to the Thomas Cole Historic Site including the historic property, buildings, and next year’s special exhibition on the work of Emily Cole, a botanical artist and daughter to Thomas Cole – The Thomas Cole Historic Site preserves and interprets the original home and studios of the artist and early environmentalist Thomas Cole (1801-1848). Cole founded the influential art movement of the United States now known as the Hudson River School of landscape painting.

– private visit to Olana to include box lunches in the Frederic Church visitor center, then introduction by Sean Sawyer, President of Olana, followed by tours of the grounds and house by Sean and another member of their senior staff – Olana is the stately residence of Frederic Church, one of the premier landscape painters of the 19th century. In the house, many of Church’s canvases are on display alongside works by friends, a collection of old master paintings, and an impressive selection of decorative arts that he and his wife, Isabel, assembled throughout their extensive travels. An architectural marvel in its own right, the house was built by architect Calvert Vaux and features design elements from across the globe. The house remains remarkably unchanged, with intricately decorated interiors that showcase panoramic views of the Taconic Hills, the Hudson River, and the Catskill Mountains.

May 15

– guided tour followed by time on our own and lunch at Storm King Art Center Storm King Art Center is a 500-acre outdoor museum located in New York’s Hudson Valley, where visitors experience large-scale sculpture and site-specific commissions under open sky. Since 1960, Storm King has been dedicated to stewarding the hills, meadows, and forests of its site and surrounding landscape. Building on the visionary thinking of its founders, Storm King supports artists and some of their most ambitious works. Changing exhibitions, programming, and seasons offer discoveries with every visit.

– return to Philadelphia by late afternoon

Still in the works are delicious dinners (hopefully to include one at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park), gallery/studio visits, and time to explore a quaint town or two.

A block of rooms is being held at the new Inn at Bellefield in Hyde Park, which is centrally located for our explorations. Please use the link below to make your reservation.

Please let either one of us know if you have any questions. Once you have made your reservation, please email Michele at mvb@brotmanonline.com so that we can keep an attendance list. We are developing a budget of entrance fees, bus transportation fee, etc. and once we have an accurate headcount we will be able to divide up the costs. We are working to keep the per person cost in line with past trips.
