Gifts to the Museum

Since 1978 the Women’s Committee has raised and granted in excess of $12,000,000 to the Museum. Proceeds are given to the Museum through an annual Grant Review process. The Women’s Committee invites each department within the Museum to submit requests. Members of the Committee study each proposal, and the entire membership meets to discuss, review and vote on the requests.

Proceeds granted to the Museum support a wide variety of projects. Monies raised have helped to establish the Robert Montgomery Scott endowment fund for future exhibitions, and have provided full financial support for educational projects such as Form in Art, a ground-breaking program offering studio art classes to unsighted and legally blind adults. Curatorships have been endowed and special undertakings, such as the reinstallation of galleries, have been supported. State-of-the-art equipment has been provided to the Museum’s conservation department, to the library and to the department of photography. Internships have been subsidized, catalogues have been underwritten, and a joint venture with the Free Library of Philadelphia was initiated for the benefit of Philadelphia school children.

In addition, the Committee supplies funding for continuing education for the three Museum Guide programs and supplies fresh flowers for the Grand Staircase at Christmas, Easter, and other special occasions. Works of art have been purchased for the Museum’s collections, and each year a percentage of the Craft Show proceeds are set aside in a fund specifically created for the purchase of an important craft to add to the Museum’s permanent collection.
